Job title – Accounting Student

Department - Multiple departments (Crop Inputs, Corporate Reporting, Accounts

Payable)

Company – Richardson International

Where did you hear about the job?

Most business schools have their own career portals through which students can apply for this role. But you can also find these kinds of jobs on LinkedIn or through the company website.

How did you get this job?

I applied through the Asper School of Business career portal and got this role.

What skills or qualifications if any are essential for success in this role?

Proficiency on Microsoft Suite.
Ability to network and clear multiple rounds of interviews.
The role is usually open to students pursuing a degree through an accredited institution.

What does your typical day look like ?

In Accounts Payable, each day would look pretty much the same as I had to contact vendors, analyze and enter invoices to make sure payments were going out on time.
In Corporate Reporting , I was working on month-end financial tasks like reconciliation, variance analysis and expense allocation while having less busier days in the middle of the month.
In Crop Inputs , I was working on process improvements, internal audits , month-end reports generation while having some daily tasks every morning.

What are some of your job responsibilities?

Each position that I held at this organization had varying degrees of tasks and responsibilities. To summarize my experience across three different teams, I was doing the month-end reporting for various business segments , working on internal audits, budgeting and helping with the Accounts Payable function.

What’s your most and least favourite thing about the job and/or company?

The company has an amazing culture with the social committee putting on a variety of fun events every month. They also have their own soccer team which helps you network with coworkers outside of work. They hire a lot of students, and everyone is very supportive. I really enjoyed my experience here and I have nothing negative to say about the company.

What’s the management like ?

I always had amazing supervisors throughout my roles and the upper management is always very friendly as well. People take the time to answer any questions you have and there is a focus on personal growth and development.

What are some tips you would like to share for candidates applying to similar

positions?

Work on your networking skills, it is essential. The accounting recruitment cycle can be long and hard, but as long as you are confident and you present yourself well, you will be fine. Work on your time management skills and Excel skills. Make sure to try out both Public and Private Accounting practices before deciding on your long term employer.

So, if you are a student looking to intern at Richardson International, hopefully this post inspired you.
