Packing clothes when traveling internationally can be a bit overwhelming. To make it a little easy for you, here is a list of items to consider.
1. Summer clothes: Even though Winnipeg has the coldest winter weather, do not leave your summer clothes behind. From May to August, you will want to wear your shorts, crop tops, swimsuits, and sundresses. Don’t hesitate to pack a bunch of t-shirts. After mid-September, the temperature slowly starts dropping, and you can wear those t-shirts under the shirts. Bring your favorite hoodies. Hoodies are the one thing that I wear the most throughout the year. In winters, when the temperature goes down to -30 to -40, you will need a lot of layers outside, but when you enter any buildings, malls, or university, the heat inside will make you remove your jackets or cardigans, and thus it will be nice to wear your summer clothes underneath.

2. Undergarments :One of the important clothing items to pack is your undergarments. Bring at least 20-25 sets. Sometimes, we are used to wearing the same brands for a long time and you might not find those here. If you are living on your own, you might not be able to do laundry regularly, so it’s good to pack extras. Just bring a lot !

3. Cultural attires: You might think, you will not get a chance to wear those, but trust me, you will! And, if you don’t bring them, you will regret it. You will find a lot of people from your community, and there will be many events and festival celebrations where you can flaunt your cultural clothes. Your school might as well hold various cultural events celebrating all religions, and you would definitely want to bring your best foot forward.

4. Formal Suit: Throughout your time here, you will surely go on some interviews and might as well attend meetings, business events, and more. One thing that will boost up your confidence at that time will be a nice suit. So, don’t forget to pack a couple of formal clothing options.

5. Comfortable shoes: Shoes are the most worn footwear here. Pack comfortable footwear. As an immigrant, you are most likely to commute through buses, and in case you find yourself running to catch a bus, the last thing you want is your shoes getting you in trouble. Some jobs will require standing for longer periods of time and thus investing in good shoes is very important. So, bring some good quality, strong grip comfortable shoes. If traveling in winters, even though you can buy snow boots from here, do pack your own shoes.

6. Jackets :You might not find jackets suitable for -40 degrees from your home country and you can buy those here. But do not leave your favorite denim, blazers, coats, fleece, and raincoats behind. Now, they can increase the weight of your luggage, but you can try to carry them along. I remember carrying three jackets packed one in another in my arms at the airport. I did not like this idea initially, but I am glad I brought them.

7. Socks and accessories: Bring at least 10-15 pairs of socks along and all kinds. Get the thin ones, the normal and then the warm ones. In summers, you might not need those when outside wearing your sandals, flip flops, or crocs. But even then, at work where you are required to wear shoes (mostly), you will need socks every single day. Get a bunch of dark-colored socks. Do not forget to pack shoelaces, shoe polish, and insoles. Just one of each will be enough to be prepared for emergencies.

Some more tips:
1. When buying shoes for winter, get one size large so that you can wear thick socks to keep your feet warm.
2. For people who wear turbans, make sure you pack enough good-quality ones with you.
3. Don’t leave your shawls, scarves, and wraps behind.
4. Pack 3-4 sets of nightwear. You might not feel like spending money on those when you come here, so better bring yours.
5. When buying jackets, try to get the ones with enough space under the sleeves for layers.
