Hello Bavlyfe readers,
I’m back with some exciting updates to share! Over the past couple months, life has taken a thrilling turn, and I can’t wait to bring you along on this journey. From making a bold career move to relocating to a new city, every step has been a mix of challenges, growth, and triumphs. Let me walk you through the highlights of this transformative phase in my life.
Taking the Leap: From Winnipeg to Calgary
You might recall from my previous blog that I worked a government job in Winnipeg. While stable and secure, I found the role monotonous and saw limited growth opportunities. Leaving that position to work full-time at Walmart was a big decision—one that came with its own set of nerves. But deep down, I knew I wanted something dynamic, something that allowed me to make a real difference.
Fast forward to today, and I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve joined Walmart’s Home Office as an Analyst in the Global Mobility Department and the role is based in Calgary. My work revolves around supporting Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs), providing them with resources, guidance, and information about immigration programs. It’s a role that aligns perfectly with my passion for helping the immigrant community and international students. Knowing that my work makes an impact is incredibly fulfilling.
Relocating to Calgary
This new role brought me to Calgary, a city I’ve been wanting to live in. The move itself was seamless, thanks to Walmart’s generous relocation support. From a 30-day temporary accommodation to a rental car and coverage for my flight and meals on the final move day, they ensured my transition was as smooth as possible. It’s rare to find an employer so invested in their employees’ well-being, and I feel immensely grateful.
Calgary is vibrant and dynamic, offering a perfect blend of urban energy and natural beauty. Unlike Winnipeg, where I lived without needing a car, Calgary’s vastness has nudged me to start driving. In Winnipeg, I was so close to my work location, that I would just walk and my other job was work-from-home, so I never felt the need to buy a car. But Calgary is a big city, and since I will be working from different site locations, getting a car has become a necessity. For now, I’m using a rental car provided as part of my relocation package, but I’m excited to purchase my first car soon—a milestone I’ve been looking forward to!
The Role: Making an Impact Across Regions
My position as a Global Mobility Analyst is hybrid, allowing me the flexibility to work both from home and on-site. Initially, my work focuses on distribution centers in Calgary, but it will soon expand to retail stores across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Supporting TFWs on their journey to permanent residence through tailored resources and guidance feels rewarding and aligns with my long-standing commitment to the immigrant community.
I’ve always believed in the importance of feeling connected to your work, and this role provides just that. Every day, I see the direct impact of my efforts in empowering others to navigate their paths to success. It’s more than just a job—it’s a way to contribute meaningfully to people’s lives.
Calgary vs. Winnipeg: First Impressions
While I’ll save the detailed comparisons for an upcoming blog, here are a few initial thoughts. Calgary’s pace is quicker, its skyline more prominent, and its opportunities more abundant. That said, Winnipeg will always hold a special place in my heart for its laid-back charm and the relations that I made along the way. I came to Winnipeg as a fresh high-school graduate like most of us do, and have grown into an independent changed person. I have seen a lot, have had various experiences and learned plenty, and I will always call that 1st apartment 'home' where I spent 4 amazing years.
Stay tuned for a dedicated post where I’ll dive into the differences between the two cities and share my experiences in more detail.
Reflections on the new Journey
This role wasn’t handed to me overnight. It came after several applications and rejections. At the time, those rejections stung, but looking back, I’m grateful. They paved the way for this incredible opportunity, one that far exceeds what I had initially envisioned. To anyone facing setbacks: keep pushing forward. Trust that there’s a better plan in store for you. You will achieve way more than you think you can. So think big, stay motivated and don't be afraid to take some big decisions.
Life Lessons: Embracing Change and Growth
The past few months have taught me several valuable lessons:
Take Calculated Risks: Leaving a secure government job wasn’t easy, but trusting my instincts led me to a role that’s both fulfilling and growth-oriented.
Be Open to Change: Relocating to a new city is daunting, but it’s also an opportunity to rediscover yourself and embrace new experiences.
Celebrate Milestones: From getting my first car to starting a new job, every milestone is a step forward.
Stay Resilient: Rejections are redirections. They’re a part of the journey to something better.
Looking Ahead
With a new job, a new city, and exciting opportunities on the horizon, I’m eager to see what’s next. My goal is to continue growing, both personally and professionally, while staying true to my passion for helping others. Through Bavlyfe, I hope to inspire you to chase your dreams, embrace change, and trust the process.
To everyone reading this: I wish you health, happiness, and success in all your endeavors. Thank you for being a part of my journey and for letting me be a part of yours.
